Coverage varies by publication. The separate trouble-code reference covers the later Volvo applications listed above, not an S40/V50-specific code database. The Duratec excerpt is an engine-family chapter with Ford engine codes, rather than a model-specific S40/V50 manual.

Engine Repair Depth and Timing Tools

The mechanical sections provide piston-ring data, connecting-rod and crankshaft inspection information, valve-clearance specifications, and component-specific torque settings.

Bottom-end coverage: The workshop manual’s piston, crankshaft and cylinder-block procedures apply to the 2.4L gasoline and 2.0L diesel engines. Its 1.8L and 2.0L gasoline coverage excludes those bottom-end dismantling operations.

For 2.4L camshaft work, the manual identifies Volvo locking tool 999 5452 and provides dimensions for a workshop-made alternative. The later references warn that incorrect crankshaft/camshaft movement during valve service can damage valves, and improper oil-pump installation can damage the pump’s sealing ring.

Transmission Work and Diagnostic Equipment

Transmission chapters describe external service, removal and installation, seals, selector mechanisms, and fault diagnosis. Internal manual and automatic transmission rebuilding is assigned to specialists.

TCM fault-code clearing and replacement window-regulator initialization can require dedicated Volvo diagnostic equipment. The separate DTC reference explains code-setting conditions and possible causes for its listed applications.

Always cross-reference torque specs and clearance tolerances with standard shop safety practices before beginning heavy mechanical work or lifting the vehicle.

The S40 parts reference combines exploded illustrations, part numbers, component-specific chassis or engine-number breaks, and labor-time entries. These entries support repair estimating; they are not step-by-step repair procedures.

Selected Valve-Clearance and Oil-Pressure References

For the S40/V50 1.8L and 2.0L gasoline engines, the workshop manual lists cold valve clearances of 0.22–0.28 mm at the intake and 0.27–0.33 mm at the exhaust. The adjustment section explains the use of replacement bucket tappets.

For the same engines, oil-pressure reference ranges at operating temperature are 1.3–2.7 bar at 1,500 rpm and 2.3–5.2 bar at 3,000 rpm.
