Serial Breaks and System Differences

The 0G960500 serial break is more than a parts-list change. Engines through 0G960499 use the earlier external plunger/diaphragm fuel pump; later engines use the mechanical water-cooled pump. Lubrication data distinguishes later oil-pump builds beginning at S/N 0T427437 for electric-start models and 0T426439 for manual-start models. Manual-Specific Repair Cautions

The timing-belt instructions warn against using a metal tool to stretch the belt onto the driven gear, where scratching or damaging the belt can compromise the repair. During either gearcase installation, lubricant left on top of the driveshaft can prevent full crankshaft engagement; tightening the housing fasteners in that condition can load and damage the driveshaft, crankshaft, powerhead, or gear housing.

Before fuel-system repair, stop the engine, disconnect the battery, drain fuel into an approved container, and work in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Electrical service also requires battery isolation whenever terminals could be grounded or touched.
