The factory notices state that the service material was prepared primarily for Yamaha dealers and trained mechanics, and assumes a basic understanding of mechanical and electrical service. It is therefore suited to technicians and experienced owners who already have that foundation and the required test equipment; the Jet Drive overhaul material specifically recommends an authorized Yamaha mechanic for that work.

Match the 40V/50H, 40C/50C, and F40B Codes

The December 1997 40W/50W publication uses internal 40V and 50H designations. Its model matrix covers 40V configurations from VMH, VMHD, VMHO, VMO, and VWH through VE, VEO, VEHTO, VET, and VETO, along with 50H configurations HMHO, HMHD, HMO, HMDO, HWHD, HEDO, HET, and HETO. U.S. and Canadian names include C40MH, 40MH, C40ER, 40ER, P40TH, C40TR, 40TR, 50ER, C50TR, and 50TR. Each listed build is tied to a starting-serial block.

Those codes matter because the manual separates manual and electric starting, tiller and remote control, manual tilt, hydro tilt, and PTT, premixed and oil-injection lubrication, choke and Prime Start enrichment, and one- or three-lamp warning systems. The July 2003 40C/50C publication separately identifies 40VETO/40TR and 50HETO/50TR, again with starting serial numbers. The F40B manual covers BMHD, BWHD, BED, and BET configurations, mapped to F40MH, F40ER, and F40TR where applicable.

Powerhead, Gearcase, and Electrical Repair Depth

The two-stroke powerhead chapters go beyond routine maintenance. They provide removal and installation charts for the power unit, carburetors, electrical unit, cylinder head, crankcase, and crankshaft/piston assembly, followed by inspection limits for bores, pistons, rings, crankshaft runout, reeds, and bearings. Fuel specifications distinguish model-dependent main and pilot jet selections and also cover float height and electrothermal-valve testing.

Lower-unit repair is supported by separate U.S./Canada and non-U.S. shimming methods, pinion and forward/reverse gear setup, and final backlash measurement. Special-tool tables identify the Yamaha equipment used for this work, including the YB-06139 flywheel holder, YB-06117 flywheel puller, YU-03097 dial indicator, YB-06265 backlash indicator, and YB-06175-2B tilt-cylinder wrench, with corresponding 90890-series numbers where listed.

Jet Drive Editions and Service Cautions

The 1997 Jetdrive supplement covers 40, 50, and 90 three-cylinder applications plus V4 115 and V6 150/200 configurations. The November 2001 four-stroke edition covers F40, F50, F80, and F115 powerheads; the September 2002 edition revises that mix to F40, F60, F90, and F115. These are Jet Drive-specific supplements intended for use with the applicable outboard owner's and service manuals, not replacements for full engine repair coverage.

The F40B section warns that its crankcase oil seals can be damaged if fitted after the case bolts are tightened, while the Jet Drive overhaul section explains that trapped grease pressure can damage both the pump seals and housing. Fuel-system work, ignition testing, rotating assemblies, and trim/tilt service should be handled with the safety practices and test equipment specified in the manual.
