Engine, Clutch and Chassis Service

The following highlights are a selection of the contents, rather than a complete table of contents. Other topics include storage preparation and muffler/spark arrester cleaning.

• Engine repair: Step-by-step removal, disassembly, component inspection, reassembly, and installation procedures, including cylinder-head, piston, crankshaft, and cam-chain work.

• Belt drive and final drive: Drive-belt replacement, clutch measurements, reduction-gear disassembly, chain and sprocket service, and axle-bearing replacement.

Engine Inspection and Reassembly

The engine section goes beyond removal and installation. It describes piston-ring measurement, cylinder honing, valve removal and installation, rocker-arm inspection, camshaft measurements, and oil-pump clearance checks. Separate Y-6 and Y-12 component tables identify applicable inspection limits.

Assembly details: Photographs show camshaft timing marks, piston-ring orientation, and the cooling fan and shrouds. Exploded illustrations of the oil pump and oil screen/filter identify the related components.

The crankshaft procedures warn that a trapped cam chain can damage the sprocket, chain, or crankcase. Oil-pump assembly cautions also identify gear-to-shaft misalignment as a cause of gear and shaft damage.

Inspection limits and component-specific torque tables provide a reference for assessing worn parts and reassembling the engine and chassis. For hard-start complaints, the compression test and fuel/ignition troubleshooting charts help distinguish mechanical, fuel-delivery, and spark faults before deciding how much disassembly is needed.

Carburetor Settings and Fuel-System Service

The carburetor schematic identifies the float, needle valve, jets, throttle valve, and choke assembly. The accompanying tables distinguish the Keihin PTE used on the Y-6 from the PB used on the Y-12.

Service coverage includes float-arm measurement, initial pilot-screw settings, gas-tank removal, fuel-valve inspection, and hose routing. Fuel-system warnings address gasoline leakage and ignition sources; driven-clutch disassembly carries a separate spring-tension warning.

Electrical Tests and Starter-Motor Scope

Electrical procedures specify test connections by wire color and distinguish voltage, resistance, and peak-voltage measurements. The magneto assembly illustration identifies the flywheel, stator, and associated hardware.

Test equipment: The manual specifies a Fluke Model 73 multimeter (P/N 0644-191) and Peak Voltage Reading Adapter (P/N 0644-307) for peak-voltage checks. It also identifies the compression gauge, timing light, and engine tachometer used in the relevant procedures.

Starter-motor coverage: Removal and installation are described, but the starter motor is treated as a replacement component when defective; internal overhaul is not covered. Electrical diagnosis uses component tests and wire-color references; a full vehicle wiring diagram is not included.

Axle, Steering and Suspension Details

Rear-axle procedures explain when the axle housing can remain attached to the swing arm during axle or bearing work. Steering-post and handlebar/tie-rod exploded views identify bearings, clamps, linkage parts, and control cables.

Troubleshooting charts address steering pull, oscillation, suspension noise, and poor braking. The brake sections also specify operational checks after brake-related components have been serviced.

Valve Clearances, Oil Capacity and Timing Checks

Selected tune-up data distinguish the engines: intake and exhaust valve/tappet clearance is 0.04 mm for the Y-6 and 0.1 mm for the Y-12, measured at room temperature, approximately 68°F.

The general specifications list an engine oil capacity of 0.8 L for both models, alongside separate transmission lubricant requirements.

The ignition-timing check specifies 28° BTDC at 4000 RPM. Timing is not adjustable; this check supports diagnosis of the rotor, key, trigger-coil bracket, and CDI unit.
