Suzuki Manual Features & Content Preview
- 3,274-page PDF set in eight files: 801-page Service Manual Volume 1; 727-page Service Manual Volume 2; an additional 725-page Volume 1 edition; 214-page transmission, transfer, and differential unit-repair manual; 153-page Electrical Diagrams 1; 264-page Electrical Diagrams 2; 116-page Canvas Top supplement; and 274-page SQ420WD service supplement.
- Factory-marked M.Y. 1998–2005 coverage for Suzuki Grand Vitara SQ416, SQ420, and SQ625 configurations. The gasoline material covers G16B, J20A, and H25A systems, while the SQ420WD volume adds the RF diesel configuration. The dedicated Canvas Top supplement applies to SQ416/SQ420 only.
- Engine diagnosis and internal repair runs from DTC and scan-tool checks through fuel-pressure and injector testing, timing-system service, cylinder-head and valve-train work, oil-system repair, and piston, crankshaft, and cylinder-block inspection.
- Transmission and driveline unit repair covers both manual-transmission types, the 4A/T automatic transmission, torque converter and valve body, clutch and planetary assemblies, transfer case, front and rear differentials, propeller shafts, front drive shafts, hubs, bearings, and oil seals.
- Chassis, body, and Canvas Top procedures address power steering, alignment, suspension, brakes and ABS, SRS components, the LH-vehicle 4A/T selector and key-interlock cable, topbow frames, roof trim, body dimensions, coatings, and related removal and installation work.
- Electrical fault tracing is supported by harness and connector layouts, fuse/relay/control-unit locations, ground-point maps, power-supply diagrams, connector pin views, and system circuits for engine management, 4WD, ABS, airbags, immobilizer, lighting, instruments, HVAC, windows, locks, and mirrors.
- Technical reference material includes component-specific torque tables, fluid and refrigerant information, adjustment specifications, inspection limits, electrical test values, body-dimension charts, service-material specifications, and special-tool callouts with tool numbers.
How the Set Is Organized
The main service information is divided between an 801-page chassis/electrical/body volume and a 727-page engine volume. Together they cover diagnosis, maintenance, component replacement, adjustment, and major repair work for the SQ416/SQ420/SQ625 platform.
A second 725-page Volume 1 publication is also included and is directly marked P/N 99500-65D01-01E. It overlaps the other chassis/electrical/body volume rather than adding a third engine book, so the total page count includes edition overlap. Related-publication tables identify 99500-65D10-01E for an SQ416/SQ420/SQ625 service-manual entry, 99512-65D10-015 for the associated wiring-manual entry, and 99500-68D00-01E for the SQ420WD service manual.
Model-Specific Repair Coverage
The 116-page Canvas Top publication is a differences-only supplement for SQ416 and SQ420 Canvas Top models. It directs the technician back to the base manual whenever a procedure is unchanged. The foreword identifies 99500-65D00 as that base service manual, with 99501-65D00 for transmission/transfer/differential unit repair and 99512-65D01 for wiring information.
Canvas Top-specific material covers R-134a component locations, refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, and on-vehicle A/C service. It also addresses power-steering and suspension differences, front drive-shaft inspection and assembly, and brake-pipe and master-cylinder details. Additional sections document G16/J20 engine-control updates, the charging system, the 4A/T selector and key-interlock cable, lighting and instrumentation changes, rear-seat and trim work, body measuring points, top and topbow-frame service, seat belts, and airbag components.
The 274-page SQ420WD publication handles the configuration not covered by the gasoline engine chapters: the RF-engine diesel model. It adds RF engine mechanical procedures, cooling and fuel-system service, electronically controlled diesel-injection diagnosis, cranking and charging systems, exhaust work, automatic-transmission and hydraulic-clutch differences, rear differential information, immobilizer coverage, service data, and dedicated wiring diagrams.
Electrical Diagrams 1 separates SQ416V/SQ420V/SQ420W/SQ625W from the SQ416Q/SQ420Q Canvas Top group. The Canvas Top circuits supplement the main group, which matters when tracing shared circuits or selecting the correct component location. This volume states that its circuits are based on November 1998 production. Electrical Diagrams 2 adds VIN-based 2WD/4WD applicability, harness and connector layouts, ground locations, power distribution, and connector pin arrangements.
Diagnostic, Overhaul, and Illustration Depth
The gasoline engine chapters go well beyond maintenance data. They include compression, vacuum, and oil-pressure testing; symptom and circuit diagnosis; ECM/PCM checks; and fault finding for misfire, catalyst, EVAP, oxygen sensors, fuel pumps, injectors, and the A/C condenser fan. Internal repair sections cover timing components, camshafts and valve gear, cylinder heads, pistons and connecting rods, crankshafts, cylinder blocks, oil pumps, cooling, fuel, ignition, starting, charging, and exhaust systems.
The separate unit-repair manual carries the same depth into the driveline. It covers complete manual-transmission disassembly and reassembly, shafts and gears, shift mechanisms, bearings, and oil seals. The 4A/T material details the oil pump, overdrive unit, forward and direct clutches, center support, planetary gear train, output shaft, and valve body. Transfer and differential sections add free-axle hub and actuator work, carrier and case service, pinion and bearing inspection, setup, and adjustment.
Useful drawings include A/C refrigerant-flow and engine-room component-location diagrams, front CV-joint and drive-shaft exploded views, automatic-transmission bearing and race installation views, harness-routing and connector layouts, Canvas Top/topbow-frame illustrations, and body-dimension measuring-point drawings.
The factory cautions are specific. R-134a refrigerant-system parts and compressor oil are identified as noninterchangeable with R-12 equipment. The automatic-transmission overhaul warns against prying case joints and damaging sealing surfaces, while the Canvas Top body section notes that the multi-piece roof trim can be ruined if separated during removal. Use stable vehicle support for underbody and suspension repair, approved recovery equipment for refrigerant work, and the manual’s SRS precautions before servicing airbags, pretensioners, or nearby wiring.
