Repair and Diagnostic Depth
The base chapters go beyond routine maintenance. They cover major mechanical teardown, inspection, repair, adjustment, and final checks for the Twin Cam 88 engine, five-speed transmission, clutch and primary drive, fuel system, chassis, and brakes. Production Changes That Matter During Repair
The engine section separates the early-1999 rear cam-sprocket arrangement from the later-1999-on splined design. It also warns that 1999 and 2000-on oil-pump parts are different and are not interchangeable. Those distinctions matter before ordering parts or selecting the applicable assembly view. The cam-support-plate material further notes that forcing the assembly when the camshaft ends are not aligned with the inner needle bearings can damage those bearings.
Other year-specific coverage includes 1999–2000 versus 2001 compensating-sprocket parts, several shifter-system revisions, 1999 and 2000-on wheel-hub and brake differences, 2002-on suspension changes, and the revised 2005 clutch-inspection-cover gasket. The supplement is designed to be used with the corresponding main chapter: it supplies the changed procedures and specifications rather than repeating unchanged work.
EFI Scope, Diagrams, and Wiring
The 2002–2005 supplement adds basic EFI troubleshooting and mechanical service around the sensors, induction module, fuel-supply hardware, and pressurized tank components. Complete electronic EFI diagnosis and idle-setting procedures require Harley-Davidson Digital Technician equipment and related specialty tools; the manual directs unresolved electronic faults to a properly equipped dealer.
Illustrations include separate early- and later-1999 camshaft-and-cover assemblies, the 2003-on shift assembly, EFI engine-sensor and induction-module views, and year-specific front-brake-caliper layouts. The wiring section covers 1999–2000 and 2001–2003 model groups, 2001–2004 FXDP, and 2004–2005 carbureted and EFI configurations, with separate FXDWG and speedometer/tachometer diagrams where applicable.
Engine timing, pressurized fuel-system work, steering repair, and hydraulic brake service can cause component damage or unsafe operation when the wrong model-year procedure or tool is used. Match the motorcycle’s exact configuration to the applicable chapter and supplement section before beginning repair.
