Powershift, Hydraulic and Chassis Workshop Coverage

The following is a selection of covered work, rather than a complete contents list. Other topics include throttle-cable adjustment and optional engine and range-gearbox heaters.

• Transmission: Fault finding, pressure testing and step-by-step procedures for wet master-clutch repair, PTO/splitter dismantling, speed-gearbox service and range-box assembly.

• Axles and driveshafts: Hub and differential repair, propshaft servicing, pinion-depth measurement, solid-spacer installation, and crown-wheel and pinion adjustment.

• Hydraulics and draft control: Pump testing and repair, mechanical and electronic valve-block service, spool-slice work, Electronic Draft Control diagnosis and rear lift-ram overhaul.

• Electrical diagnosis: Sectional wiring diagrams, starting and charging tests, ECU fault-code tables, instrument programming, CAN monitoring, and Powershift/master-clutch calibration.

• Brakes: ABS/non-ABS troubleshooting, caliper repair and bleeding, trailer air and hydraulic valve service, parking-brake work, and actuator testing.

• Steering and suspension: Steering-box pressure tests, limit-valve setting and overhaul, front-suspension repairs, rear ride-height adjustment, and gas-spring/accumulator testing.

• Cab and optional equipment: Direct cab glazing, R134a air-conditioning service, agricultural front-hitch work, Plus-model position-sensor replacement and front-PTO transfer-box procedures.

Written for JCB distributor service engineers receiving or having completed JCB technical training, this manual assumes sound knowledge of workshop practice, safety procedures and hydraulic-equipment repair.

Powershift, Gearboxes and Drive Axles

Internal transmission procedures extend to clutch-pack inspection, synchro-hub assembly, PTFE piston-ring seal fitting and final checks. Transmission hydraulic circuits and exploded PTO, clutch and gearbox views accompany the work.

Removal access: Complete transmission removal requires the cab to be removed. The range gearbox and front or rear PTO clutches have separate removal procedures with the cab in place, helping the workshop assess the required access before dismantling.

Axle sections identify the SD70 front axle and PD90 rear axle. Drive-head and hub instructions cover bearing work, differential-lock components and the settings needed when rebuilding the crown-wheel and pinion assembly.

Repair notes address PTO housing damage from forcing misaligned assemblies together and wet-clutch failure if temporary bolts are left inside instead of using the specified retainers.

Hydraulic Variants and Draft-Control Repair

The hydraulic sections distinguish manually actuated external valves on 3170/3190/3220 machines from electronically actuated valves on their Plus counterparts. Separate mechanical and Plus-model hydraulic schematics explain the pump feeds, relief circuits and draft-control connections.

Serial-specific valve work: Electronic valve-block and pilot-valve procedures change at the machine-number breaks listed above. Matching those branches to the tractor helps select the appropriate wiring, seals and dismantling procedures before work begins.

Repair coverage includes both pump assemblies, inlet and pilot sections, spool slices, compensators and check valves. Electronic Draft Control adds functional tests, diagnostic LED codes, draft-pin replacement, position-sensor setting and rear lift-ram instructions. Electronic actuator removal has specific restrictions, including refitting an actuator to its original valve slice.

Brake, Steering and Suspension Details

Brake instructions distinguish ABS and non-ABS circuit arrangements and cover trailer valves, the air dryer/unloader, parking-brake components and air/hydraulic actuators, including bench tests. The factory-set circuit protection valve is treated as a replacement unit rather than an overhaul item.

Brake-fluid notes warn that ordinary hydraulic oil can damage brake-system seals.

Steering coverage includes the recirculating-ball steering box, limit valves and steering-shaft universal-joint phasing. Suspension chapters cover front control arms, springs and Panhard-rod work, followed by the rear-suspension hydraulic circuit, height-corrector components and cylinder repair. Damped and undamped rear suspension cylinders are shown separately.

Wiring, Service Master and ECU Diagnostics

Connector-terminal views, splice identification and harness-repair instructions support circuit tracing. Diagram examples include the air-conditioning/heater wiring diagram, CAN-bus and electronic-engine circuits, and transmission hydraulic schematics.

Diagnostic tools: JCB Service Master, the Wingst program and the Combined Diagnostics Tool are documented. Wingst covers EMS setup, software updating, data logs and transmission diagnosis; the Combined Diagnostics Tool adds ABS, engine and Central Controller functions.

Engine diagnostics exclude 3170/3170 Plus. E-prefix engine codes apply to 3190/3190 Plus and 3220/3220 Plus; Q-prefix codes apply to 3200/3200 Plus and 3230/3230 Plus. Central Controller and electronic spool-valve diagnosis specifically address 3170 Plus, 3190 Plus and 3220 Plus.

Some wiring sheets retain 2000 Series references, but those circuits are incomplete for that series. JCB directs 2000 Series wiring work to Publication 9803/8020.

Maintenance, Tools and Engine Scope

Service schedules run from daily checks through the 5,000-hour/four-year schedule. Procedures cover lubrication, ROPS inspection, hydraulic filters and suction strainers, gearbox and axle oil service, brake and air-system checks, fuel-system bleeding, cooling-system maintenance and radiator cleaning.

Maintenance instructions distinguish transmission-filter arrangements, fuel pre-filters and belt layouts. Standard and North American fluid tables sit alongside zinc-plated and Dacromet fastener tables, component torques, wear limits, electrical test values and calibration data.

Listed workshop tools include the 892/00253 pressure-test kit, 892/00892 speed-gearbox locking tool, 892/00918 solid-spacer setting kit, and 892/01033 Data Link Adaptor with 721/10885 harness.

Engine repair limits: Section T contains B5.9, QSB and QSB6.7 technical data and flywheel-damper replacement. Cold-start heater work appears in Section A and electronic engine diagnosis in Section C. This is not a full internal engine-overhaul manual; brake-air-compressor removal is referred to a separate engine service manual.

Hydraulic pressure, compressed air, refrigerant, loaded suspension components and heavy driveline assemblies require proper isolation, lifting support and trained repair procedures. Follow the JCB safety instructions before work begins.

Selected Gearbox Preload and Splitter-Clutch Clearances

Speed gearbox: Layshaft-bearing preload is specified as 0.075–0.125 mm with new bearings and zero–0.05 mm with used bearings. The section explains the spacer-and-shim arrangement used to establish preload.

Powershift splitter: Clutch-pack end float is 3.0–3.5 mm when fitting either new or used plates. These specifications accompany the inspection and assembly procedures for the respective gearbox components.
