Coverage and Configuration Detail

The identification section decodes original and later VIN formats, gearbox/axle and maximum-speed codes, and stamped unit-number locations. Engine data is split by build: the B5.9 for 3170/3170 Plus, charge-air-cooled QSB for 3190/3190 Plus and 3220/3220 Plus, and QSB6.7 for 3200/3200 Plus and 3230/3230 Plus. Maintenance instructions also branch by transmission-filter arrangement, fuel pre-filter, fuel-system bleeding method, and belt layout.

Plus machines are treated as different configurations, not merely alternate model names. The publication identifies the Plus-only front-hitch position sensor and speed-gearbox shift cables, and separates manually actuated external hydraulics on 3170/3190/3220 from electronic spool and draft-control systems on 3170 Plus/3190 Plus/3220 Plus. Electrical circuits change at machine breaks 643124/643125 and 643551/643552; the electronic draft-control valve has separate procedures through machine 0644007 and from 0644008.

Some sectional wiring sheets retain 2000 Series references because JCB originally shared the drawings. The manual states that those circuits are incomplete for 2000 Series tractors and directs those machines to Publication 9803/8020.

Workshop Repair and Diagnostic Depth

The transmission chapters cover the wet master clutch, front and rear PTO clutches, six-speed gearbox, range box, four-wheel-drive clutch, JCB Selectronic air-assisted range change, propshafts, the SD70 front axle, and PD90 rear axle. Factory procedures include gearbox removal, clutch-pack inspection, layshaft preload, synchro-hub assembly, PTFE piston-ring seal fitting, pinion-depth measurement, solid-spacer installation, crown-wheel and pinion adjustment, and Powershift pressure testing.

Hydraulic repair content includes both pumps, mechanical and electronic valve blocks, relief and pilot circuits, spool slices, compensators, check valves, Electronic Draft Control tests, position-sensor setting, and rear lift-ram overhaul. Brake coverage spans ABS/non-ABS operation, caliper service and bleeding, trailer air and hydraulic valves, parking-brake components, the air dryer, actuators, and bench testing. Steering and suspension sections add steering-box limit-valve setting and overhaul, front-suspension component replacement, rear-suspension schematics, ride-height adjustment, gas-spring/accumulator testing, and suspension-cylinder repair.

Electrical diagnosis covers starting and charging tests, harness repair, connector and splice identification, instrument programming, wheel-slip calibration, and Powershift/master-clutch calibration. JCB Service Master, the Wingst program, Combined Diagnostics Tool, ABS tests, engine diagnostics, Central Controller diagnostics, and CAN monitoring are documented. Engine diagnostics apply to all listed machines except 3170/3170 Plus; Central Controller and electronic spool-valve diagnosis are specific to 3170 Plus, 3190 Plus, and 3220 Plus.

Maintenance, Tools, and Scope Limits

Service coverage runs from daily checks through the 5,000-hour/four-year schedule. It includes separate standard and North American fluid tables, lubrication points, ROPS inspection, air-conditioning service, hydraulic filter and suction-strainer work, gearbox and axle oil service, brake and air-system checks, model-specific fuel service, cooling-system maintenance, and radiator cleaning.

Reference material includes zinc-plated and Dacromet fastener tables, component torque settings, pressure and flow specifications, capacities, clearances, wear limits, electrical test values, and calibration data. Listed tools include the 892/00253 hydraulic pressure-test kit, 892/00892 speed-gearbox locking tool, 892/00918 solid-spacer setting kit, and 892/01033 Data Link Adaptor with harness 721/10885.

The repair notes flag several easy ways to create a second fault. PTO clutch housings must not be pulled together with the retaining bolts before the plate teeth are aligned, and dedicated wet-clutch retainers prevent ordinary bolts from being left inside and disabling the clutch. Ordinary hydraulic oil damages brake-system seals and is not interchangeable with the specified brake fluid.

Engine scope is limited. Section T supplies B5.9, QSB, and QSB6.7 technical data plus flywheel-damper removal and replacement; cold-start heater work is in Section A and electronic engine fault finding is in Section C. It is not a full internal engine-overhaul manual, and brake-air-compressor removal is referred to the separate engine service manual.

Hydraulic pressure, compressed air, refrigerant, loaded suspension components, and heavy driveline assemblies require proper isolation, lifting support, and trained repair procedures. Follow the JCB safety instructions before work begins.
