- Defines exact machine coverage: JCB 8014 serial numbers 1156000-1156999, 1282000-1283999, and 1505500-1506499; JCB 8016 serial numbers 1155000-1155999; and JCB 8018 serial numbers 1046000-1047999 and 1319000-1324999. This is official JCB Publication No. 9803/9350-3, © 2004 JCB Service.
- Maps hydraulic diagnosis and repair: Covers the three-section gear pump, main control valve, main and auxiliary relief valves, pressure-maintenance and dual-solenoid valves, track and slew motors, rotary coupling, and hydraulic rams, with pressure testing, pump-flow testing, fault isolation, removal, inspection, dismantling, and assembly procedures.
- Separates travel-system configurations: Includes single-speed 8014/8016, two-speed 8016/8018, and two-speed 8018 extending-undercarriage rotary-coupling procedures. Two-speed travel is standard on the 8018, optional on the 8016, and unavailable on the 8014.
- Provides electrical and control-system depth: Separate Tier 2 and Tier 3 full-machine schematics are backed by cab/canopy and model-specific harness drawings, wire identification, sealed harness repair, starter and alternator tests, servo hand-controller fault finding and assembly, plus dozer, throttle, track-lever, and control-bar service.
- Details structural and drivetrain work: Covers cab tilting and direct glazing; removal and inspection of the bucket linkage, long/extra-long/Gravemaster dippers, boom, and kingpost; rubber and steel tracks; rollers and metallic face seals; driven sprocket; idler/recoil assemblies; and track and slew gearbox repair.
- Includes factory reference data and tooling: Provides 38 illustrated service-tool references, fastener and hydraulic-connection torque tables, hydraulic pressure and flow data, fluid capacities, component wear limits, ram specifications, and electrical test values.
- Sets a clear engine boundary: Identifies the HL 403C-11 Tier 2 and GJ 403D-11 Tier 3 engines and supplies maintenance data, general specifications, and torque settings. Full internal engine repair is outside this set; JCB directs the reader to separate engine manuals 9806/2190 and 9806/3090.
The 394-page PDF set is organized into 12 files: Service Manual front file, 2 pages; General Information, 34; Care and Safety, 18; Maintenance, 50; Attachments, 20; Body and Framework, 28; Electrics, 56; Controls, 32; Hydraulics, 106; Gearboxes, 16; Track and Running Gear, 24; and Engine, 8. Its repair depth and reliance on hydraulic gauges, flow-test equipment, a multimeter, lifting gear, and model-specific tools make it best suited to experienced technicians and mechanics working in an equipped shop. JCB states that it is not a training manual.
Configuration-Specific Schematics and Fault Finding
The diagram package includes hydraulic schematic 236/60023 Issue 10 for the 8014/8016 and 236/60025 Issue 11 for the 8018, together with Tier 2 electrical circuit 853/20030 Issue 3 and Tier 3 circuit 332/S1222. Harness examples include 721/11794 Issue 5 for the Tier 2 8014 cab and 8016/8018 cab or canopy, plus 332/R9120 Issue 1 for the Tier 3 8014 engine harness. Hose-color tables trace control-valve, rotary-joint, ram, dipper-option, and extending-undercarriage functions.
The hydraulic fault path separates all-service failures from single-function, servo, travel, and slew faults. It then directs diagnosis toward pump condition, valve sections, relief valves, rotary-joint leakage, track-motor lubrication-return flow, high-speed selection, or slew braking. Related procedures cover contamination control, relief-valve testing, pump-flow testing, and component checks after repair.
Component-Level Workshop Coverage
The manual goes inside the control valve, hydraulic pump, track motor and brake valve, slew motor and relief assemblies, rotary coupling, and boom, dipper, bucket, dozer, swing, and undercarriage-extension rams. Gearbox chapters add exploded assembly views, inspection criteria, and reassembly data. Running-gear procedures distinguish the 8014 idler/recoil arrangement from the 8016/8018 design and identify recoil components that are non-serviceable.
Routine coverage includes service schedules, final inspection, fluids and capacities, lubrication points, engine oil/filter/cooling/belt service, separate Tier 2 and Tier 3 fuel-filter and bleeding procedures, hydraulic-filter replacement, gearbox oil service, and track adjustment. Attachment material covers flat-face quick couplings, standard and Quickhitch buckets, bucket teeth, the Hammermaster 100 and Quickhitch rockbreaker, and hand-held hydraulic tools.
Tools, Torque Data, and Repair Cautions
The tool reference identifies JCB part numbers such as hydraulic pressure-test kit 892/00253, auxiliary relief-valve test block 331/31069, pump-drive alignment tool 331/22966, ram seal fitting tool 892/00334, piston-seal assembly tool 892/01027, and slide-hammer kit 993/68100. Torque coverage includes UNF Grade S, metric grades 8.8/10.9/12.9, rivet-nut and internal-hex fasteners, BSP and SAE adapters, hoses, and JCB Torque Stop connections.
The repair notes flag two easy-to-miss damage risks: a misaligned slew-gearbox dowel can be driven into the slew-ring area during reassembly, while the wrong track-guide setup during a steel/rubber conversion can damage the track. Safety coverage also addresses stored hydraulic pressure, raised-machine and suspended-component support, cab-tilt locking, and recoil-spring energy.
