Suzuki Bandit 1200 GSF1200S / GSF1200SA Service Manual Set, 1996–1997 (P/N 99500-39131-03E)

Use the base manual for shared service procedures and the supplement for ABS diagnosis and model-specific work on the wheels, rear suspension, and brake system.

Chapter Files and Wiring Diagram Readability

Text search and diagram detail: The PDFs have no built-in text search or bookmarks. Small labels in the base wiring diagram and pin numbers in the ABS connector view are legible when zoomed in. Part of the base diagram’s wire-color legend is clipped at the page edge, and some wire codes in the supplement remain hard to read at higher zoom because print shows through from the reverse side.

The ZIP contains 10 printable PDFs totaling 357 pages. The base manual is split into an index file and eight chapter files. The ABS supplement is one PDF. The total includes both original covers, one unnumbered model photo page in the supplement, and two repeated pages in the base manual.

Engine Overhaul, Chassis Service, and ABS Diagnosis

These selected service topics cover major workshop jobs. The manuals also include a fairing setup drawing and a fuel-tank cushion layout.

• Engine and drivetrain: Engine removal, internal inspection and reassembly, with cylinder head, camshaft, crankshaft, transmission, clutch, and starter clutch service.
• Fuel and lubrication: Mikuni carburetor teardown, jet inspection, throttle position sensor testing, float adjustment, synchronization, and oil-cooler circuit information.
• Scheduled maintenance: Service intervals, valve clearance checks, drive chain adjustment, hydraulic clutch maintenance, and compression and oil-pressure testing.
• Chassis and brakes: Wheel and tire service, fork seals, steering-stem bearings, swingarm linkage, caliper and master cylinder overhaul, and brake bleeding.
• Electrical troubleshooting: Charging and starter fault tracing, side-stand interlock checks, digital ignitor testing, and service information for gauges, lamps, relays, and switches.

Suzuki wrote the base manual for mechanics who already have the knowledge and skills to service Suzuki motorcycles.

Engine, Carburetors, and Emissions

The engine chapter identifies components that can be serviced with the engine in the frame, including the cam-chain tensioner and starter clutch. For a full teardown, it documents crankcase separation, valve-seat work, piston and cylinder measurement, and connecting rod and crankshaft bearing selection.

The carburetor chapter illustrates the diaphragm, slow, main, starter, and float circuits and covers fuel valve and filter inspection. Lubrication and cylinder-head oil-cooling charts show oil flow, with separate coverage of oil-sump filter service. The emissions chapter covers close-tolerance carburetor components and California-model evaporative canister and PAIR air-supply routing.

Chassis and Electrical Reference

Exploded views and torque tables support wheel, brake, and suspension service. The chassis chapter covers brake-disc inspection, steering-stem tension adjustment, and hydraulic clutch master cylinder repair. The supplement identifies ABS-specific front caliper dimensions. Service tables provide clearances, wear limits, fluid capacities, and market-dependent settings.

The electrical chapter pairs troubleshooting charts with starter motor and generator service, battery checks, and fuel gauge tests. The ABS supplement adds separate wiring diagrams for the U.S., Australia, and other markets, plus brake hose, cable, harness, and ignition lead routing views.

ABS Fault Tracing and Component Checks

Pressure-mode diagrams explain how the hydraulic unit raises, holds, or reduces brake pressure. The diagnostic charts help trace a stored code to the relevant sensor, wiring, ECU power supply, relay, or hydraulic unit circuit. The connector view identifies ECU pins, and the tool list gives 09930-82710 for the ABS test switch and 09900-25008 for the multi-circuit tester.

The wheel-speed sensors, ECU, circuit breaker, and hydraulic unit are serviced as assemblies. The supplement warns that cutting the tape around the ABS diodes can sever their leads or the harness. Brake and ABS work calls for stable motorcycle supports, clean hydraulic service, and electrical isolation where specified.

Oil Pressure and ABS Test Preview

For both variants, Suzuki specifies engine oil pressure above 300 kPa and below 600 kPa at 3,000 rpm and an oil temperature of 60°C (140°F). The base manual lists possible causes of readings outside those limits, including a restricted oil passage or a faulty pump.

For the GSF1200SAV, the ABS supplement gives 800–1,200 Ω across the white and black terminals of either wheel-speed sensor. The same section covers inspection of the sensor and its rotor for physical damage.
