Mercury Marine publication 90-824052R3, June 2002, covers service and repair of the listed 1992–2000 Mercury/Mariner V6 outboards, including 105/140 Jet, XR6, Magnum III, EFI and Pro Max/Super Magnum variants. The 225 HP coverage applies to Pro Max and Super Magnum.

Ignition, Charging and Starting

The electrical section combines DVA fault tracing with an Ignition System Test Chart and a Starter Circuit Troubleshooting Flow Chart. Charging coverage includes the 40-amp alternator, regulator tests and component replacement; starter coverage extends to disassembly, inspection and reassembly.

The idle-stabilizer and spark-advance modules are nonrepairable; their sections cover testing and replacement. On the XR6/Magnum III idle-stabilizer shift system, a resistor shorted to ground can overadvance timing and cause damaging powerhead detonation.

Carburetors and Serial-Specific EFI Diagnosis

WMH and WMV coverage explains fuel circuits, cylinder-specific carburetor placement and jet selection, with high-altitude jet charts alongside disassembly and reassembly procedures.

Separate EFI chapters cover S/N 0G303045 and below and 0G303046 and above. Their low- and high-pressure fuel-route charts and Fuel Rail Electrical/Fuel Determination chart help distinguish supply restrictions from injector electrical faults and mechanical problems before major fuel-system disassembly.

Vapor-separator coverage includes float testing, teardown and reassembly. TPS adjustment is described; MAP sensor testing refers to the separate instructions for EFI Tester 91-11001A2. Digital Diagnostic Terminal 91-823686A2 is also listed as a test option.

The bleed-fitting injector fuel-delivery test does not apply to Pro Max/Super Magnum engines; those models are directed to the Digital Diagnostic Terminal and its separate instructions.

Working with marine high-voltage ignition systems and pressurized fuel lines presents inherent risks. Follow the manual's safety precautions before diagnosis or disassembly.

Powerhead, Cooling and Oil Injection

Powerhead rebuilding covers crankshaft and connecting-rod inspection, piston-ring combinations, reed blocks and cylinder-head tightening sequences. The cylinder block and crankcase cover are treated as a matched, line-bored assembly.

Water Flow drawings support cooling-circuit diagnosis, with thermostat tests and troubleshooting for the water pump, poppet valve and cooling-water pressure.

Oil-injection service extends to pump-drive components, oil-hose connections and warning-system checks. The drive-gear assembly instructions warn that mismatched teeth at the split between the gear halves can cause gear failure.

Gearcases, Jet Drives and Power Trim

Lower-unit sections distinguish right-hand rotation, left-hand counter rotation and non-ratcheting E-Z Shift assemblies. CLE, Torque Master and Sportmaster coverage includes clutch-actuator assembly and shimming, with gearcase-specific pinion-depth, driveshaft end-play and backlash references.

Jet 105/140 procedures cover impeller clearance adjustment, liner replacement and bearing-carrier rebuilding. Power-trim coverage addresses square- and round-motor designs, relay and solenoid wiring, tilt-ram service and pressure checks after repair.

RideGuide installation instructions distinguish production and high-performance applications. Single-cable steering is not recommended for Pro Max/Super Magnum models.

A Preview of Ignition Test Values

The 40-amp stator table lists 3,500–4,200 ohms between the blue and red leads and between the blue/white and red/white leads, for testing with the stator leads disconnected from the switch boxes.

The ignition-coil test specifies 0.02–0.04 ohms across its positive and negative terminals with the coil leads disconnected. The manual allows reasonable temperature-related resistance variation and explains why DVA checks may still be needed when an ohmmeter test passes.
